How do I get an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit can only be obtained from an officially authorised organisation in the same country where your driving license was issued. It is not possible to obtain a valid IDP in the UAE if you are a visitor or tourist — it must be issued before you travel, in your home country.

Important warning about fraudulent offers

Many third-party websites and — in some cases — even rental companies falsely claim they can sell or “arrange” an IDP on your behalf. These offers are often tactics to push bookings or avoid verifying proper documents. Such so-called IDPs are fake or invalid and are not recognised by UAE authorities or reputable rental companies.

Legal notice: Using a fake or forged driving document in the UAE is a serious criminal offence and can result in imprisonment, heavy fines, and deportation. If any company pressures you to use or buy a suspicious document, refuse immediately and report it to the police or your embassy.

Where to get a legitimate IDP

• Your national automobile association (e.g., AAA in the USA, AA or RAC in the UK, ADAC in Germany, CAA in Canada)
• Your country’s government transport authority or the official driving license department
